The Iridium's trademark Les Paul Mondays series continues to bring "Best In Breed" guitarists into the heart of Manhattan for one-of-a-kind collaborations with The Les Paul Trio. Robert Randolph, The North Mississippi Allstars, and more special guests will hit the club on Mondays in June, but here's a look at who's on tap this month:
Pat DiNizio (Acoustic Smithereens and The Beatles) (5/9): DiNizio and his band, The Smithereens, first came to national prominence in 1986 with their debut album 'Especially for You,' which was propelled by the instant classic single "Blood and Roses." Their new release, 'The Smithereens 2011,' is a huge hit with critics, who are ranking it among the best work the band has ever recorded. Fresh Air's Ken Tucker called the album "utterly transporting," while USA Today hailed it as "classic."
Ted Nugent (5/16): Ted Nugent emerged as a true guitar hero in the 1970's, releasing a string of platinum albums featuring massive radio anthems like 'Hey Baby,' 'Stranglehold,' 'Dog Eat Dog' and 'Cat Scratch Fever.' Throughout his lengthy and celebrated career, Nugent has released more than 30 albums and sold over 30 million records. For half the night, he'll sit in with The Les Paul Trio for a one-of-a-kind collaboration only The Iridium could present. He'll wrap up each set backed by an electric bass and drums for some of his biggest hits.
A Tribute to Rory Gallagher (5/23): In addition to honoring its namesake's legacy, this special edition of Les Paul Mondays will pay tribute to the late guitarist Rory Gallagher. The night will begin with a panel discussion and slideshow featuring family members, music critics, and historians. Following the talk, The Les Paul Trio will take the stage with special guests including Davey Knowles (Back Door Slam), Innes Sibun (Robert Plant), Jimmy Suhler (George Thorogood), Scott Holt (Buddy Guy), Roger Earl (Foghat), and more.
Alex Skolnick Trio (5/30): As the hard thrashing lead guitarist for Testament, Skolnick toured with Megadeth, Slayer, Judas Priest, and countless more. He went on to develop an innovative blend of metal and jazz on subsequent solo releases that drew rave reviews from Billboard, Downbeat, Jazziz and others. Skolnick is also a member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
