MoMA has announced its upcoming screenings and film programs, June and July 2014. Details below!
Flaherty at MoMA: Turning the Inside Out June 21-29 Each year MoMA's Department of Film collaborates with one of the Robert Flaherty Film Seminars-the longest continuously running film programs in North America and a one-of-a-kind institution that seeks to encourage filmmakers and other artists to explore the potential of the moving image-on an Exhibition that focuses on films and filmmakers working in a specific thematic area. The Flaherty's 60th Anniversary Seminar probes the essence and frontiers of the form that inspired its beginnings: the documentary. The series opens on June 21 with a program dedicated to the documentary filmmakers D. A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus, who will join us for a discussion following the screening.
MoMA Presents: Lost Persons-Two Films by Caroline Strubbe July 2-8 This special weeklong series presents the first two panels of Belgian filmmaker Caroline Strubbe's planned trilogy on emotional and physical dislocation in the new, "borderless" Europe. Although these installments tell a story in chronological order, the strength of Strubbe's observational technique is such that they need not be seen sequentially: each image seems to bristle with implied backstories and possible lines of action departing from the central narrative. The result is work that is at once pressingly real and alluringly enigmatic. Caroline Strubbe will be present at the July 2 and 3 screenings.
Carte Blanche: MK2 Through June 23 After opening his first theater in the revolutionary aftermath of May 1968, Marin Karmitz has continued to advance the cause of film through MK2, an independent, family-owned company that operates the most prestigious art cinemas in France, manages a catalog of classics that includes work by Chaplin, Truffaut, Chabrol, and Kieslowski, and continues to produce films of personal vision. In celebration of the upcoming 40th anniversary of MK2's founding, MoMA is pleased to offer Mr. Karmitz a "carte blanche" selection of his favorites among the films he has produced, distributed, or directed.
On the Edge: Brazilian Film Experiments of the 1960s and Early 1970s Through July 24 In direct dialogue with Brazil's marginal film movement, and in continuation of Lygia Clark's abandonment of the production of "commodifiable" art objects, after 1968 numerous Brazilian artists turned to the moving image as a means for self-exploration and political resistance. As the artist and filmmaker Lygia Pape put it, "Marginal was the revolutionary act of invention, a new reality, the world as change, error as adventure and the discovery of freedom...the anti-film." In conjunction with the Exhibition Lygia Clark: The Abandonment of Art, 1948-1988, MoMA presents a film series that charts the era's vibrant underground cinema scene.
Modern Mondays Ongoing MoMA's ongoing showcase for innovation on screen, Modern Mondays allows contemporary filmmakers and moving image artists to present their work directly to audiences. On June 23, in conjunction with Flaherty at MoMA: Turning the Inside Out (see above), Shuddhabrata Sengupta (Raqs Media Collective, New Delhi), Shaina Anand (CAMP, Mumbai) and Scottish moving image artist Duncan Campbell show clips and discuss their artist collectives and/or individual works. On June 30, Taiwanese artist C. Spencer Yeh premieres a new performance and presents a selection of film trailers, custom-edited for Spectacle Theater in Willamsburg, Brooklyn, where he volunteers as programmer and trailer editor.
An Auteurist History of Film Ongoing This ongoing screening cycle explores the evolution of film as a medium by charting the careers of several key directorial figures-not in order to establish a formal canon, but to develop one picture of cinematic history. Upcoming screenings include Werner Herzog's Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1973) and Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975).
