Rialto Chatter: Could Disney's AIDA Be Headed Back To The Stage?

The New York Post has reported that a national tour of Elton John and Tim Rice's "Aida" could be in the works for 2021.

According to the Post, the production will be directed by Schele Williams, a former cast member of the original Broadway production.

It has also been suggested that a Broadway stop could be in the show's future if the tour is successful.

Elton John and Tim Rice's musical is based on the opera of the same name, and tells the story of an enslaved Nubian princess, Aida, who finds her heart entangled with Radames, an Egyptian soldier who is betrothed to the Pharaoh's daughter, Amneris.

As their forbidden love blossoms, Aida is forced to weigh her heart against the responsibility that she faces as the leader of her people. Aida and Radames' love for one another becomes a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations.

The original Broadway production ran for five years and won four Tony Awards. The Original Broadway Cast Recording won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

The original Broadway cast of AIDA included Heather Headley, who won a Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of the title character, Adam Pascal, and Sherie Rene Scott.

Notable replacements in the show's cast throughout its run included Idina Menzel, Toni Braxton, Deborah Cox, Michelle Williams, Will Chase, Saycon Sengbloh, Mickey Dolenz, Mandy Gonzalez and more.
