The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF), often hailed as "the Sundance of Musical Theatre," is presenting "Undercover Showtunes," the finale of its first-ever Spring Concert Benefit Series, on Monday, June 18 at 7pm, at The Zipper Factory (336 W 37th St.) in Manhattan. Tickets are $50; $90 with post-concert cast party included, and are available by calling 212-352-3101 or online at www.nymf.org.
Press notes state, "
Undercover Showtunes is an original, first-of-its-kind concert comprised of pop and rock songs that weren't written for musicals, but sound as if they might have been – songs that tell a story, create a character, paint a full, vivid portrait as a great song in a musical is meant to do: The Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby',
Elton John and
Bernie Taupin's 'Captain Fantastic',
David Bowie's 'Major Tom' and Sting's 'Roxanne,' – as well as songs by
Joni Mitchell,
Rufus Wainwright,
Stephin Merritt, The Decemberists and more."
Featured performers in Undercover Showtunes include TV's
Christian Campbell and
Gloria Reuben of "ER,"
Miriam Shor (
Hedwig & the Angry Inch),
Mary Faber (
Avenue Q), Drama Desk nominee
Michael Winther (
Songs from an Unmade Bed), and Tony nominees
Alison Fraser (
The Secret Garden),
Peter Friedman (
Ragtime) and
Manoel Felciano (
Sweeney Todd).
The NYMF's Spring Concert Series began with
More Unauthorized Musicology of Ben Folds, and followed up with
Broadway Idol: Jaclyn Huberman and
Broadway Battle of the Bands before culminating with
Undercover Showtunes.
NYMF's 2007 Spring Concert Series is co-sponsored by BroadwayWorld.com and amNY.
