With over 100 U.S. cities and 30 international regions featured on our site, we have so many exciting theatre happenings around our Broadway World! Below, we've highlighted our top 10 stories from this week. Check out the roundup below!
East Coast
1. Connecticut: Editor Sherry Shameer Cohen reviews BAD JEWS in New Haven. She says, "... the cast is formidable, with great chemistry, and the direction by Oliver Butler superb. Paul Carey's costumes were perfect, and in the case of Daphna, symbolic of her hypocrisy. Dave Bova's hair and make-up design were ideal complements to the costumes." Check out her full review here.
2. Buffalo, NY: Editor Michael Rabice reviews AFTER MISS JULIE at Irish Classical Theatre (playing through March 22). He says, "Roaldi Boucher is the perfect antithesis of Miss Julie, striking the right chord of lower class kitchen maid and a scorned Christian woman. She secretly witnesses the sexual act between the two , but even after the event she is shockingly accepting of John, albeit that she insists the two must immediately resign from their positions so they can continue their life elsewhere." Northeast
3. Pittsburgh, PA: BOEING, BOEING takes off at the CLO Cabaret. Editor Greg Kerestan writes, "Kaplan's direction and extremely talented cast keeps the show feeling fresh and alive, even when much of its actual text and concept has long descended into sitcom cliché. The central pairing of Tony Bingham and Connor McCanlus is a masterful touch. Bingham, playing the central Lothario, is charmingly un-suave, and his Bernard has a seemingly subconscious tendency to dance awkwardly." Check out the full review here.
South Atlantic
4. Charlotte, NC: New Editor, Quinn Austin reviews MANHATTAN TRANSFER at the Knight Theatre at Levine Center for the Arts. He says, "I was taken with Cheryl Bentyne's energy and passion for the songs she was singing, not to mention her magnificent voice. And it only got better from there. Their band included an upright base, base, drums and piano. After the first song, Alan Paul spoke about Tim Houser, passing earlier last year and introduced Trist Curless, who absolutely fit into the MANHATTAN TRANSFER vocals." Read more here.
Midwest
5. Cleveland, OH: Senior Editor, Roy Berko, calls DIAL 'M' FOR MURDER "another exciting mystery at GLT." He says, "The cast is universally excellent. Beautiful Robyn Cohen makes for a believable Margot, the potential murdered wife. She gives a convincing portrayal of a rich, perfectly coifed woman, who transitions into the potential victim." Read his full review here.
6. Des Moines, IA: Editor Brooke Bridenstine previews the theatrical happenings in her "March Madness" feature, which includes CLARENCE DARROW: A ONE-MAN PLAY, MY NAME IS ASHER LEV, and INDEPENDENCE. Check out her preview piece here.
West Coast:
7. Portland, OR: Patrick Brassell reviews OTHER DESERT CITIES at Portland Center Stage. He says, "Playwright Jon Robin Baitz leads with some easy humor. Jokes about politics. Brooke is a "lefty liberal," Polly a "hardcore believer" in the wars going on in the Middle East. Jokes about Trip's television show, a sort of Courtroom of the Stars in which D-list celebrities serve as the jury on small-claims cases. There's tension underneath, but that's to be expected..." National Tour Highlight:
10. MAMMA MIA! National Tour is at the Ohio Theatre through March 8. Editor Paul Batterman says it "stands the test of time" and goes on, "MAMMA MIA! succeeds because of a solid marriage between plot (written by British playwright Catherine Johnson) and music (written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, the principal songwriters of ABBA). Johnson's script makes smooth transitions from song to song and ABBA's music still stands up to the test of time." Read his full review here.
