Joe Sears' and Jaston Williams' Red, White and Tuna, the third installment of the popular Tuna Trilogy – which includes the hits Greater Tuna and A Tuna Christmas –will return to the Kennedy Center's Eishenhower Theatre in Washington, DC for a limited 2 week engagement that begins on June 24th and extends through July 10th.
"In this latest saga," states the press release, "the Smut Snatchers, led by Vera Carp, take on the political correctness church hymns, while Petey Fisk continues his offbeat pleas for a more humane Tuna. The July heat wave in Tuna is only intensified by the hormonally-charged Tastee Kreme gals, Inita Goodwin and Helen Bedd, who have a food booth at the Reunion serving up Aunt Pearl's prize-winning potato salad, and plenty of attitude. You just can't breathe tomorrow's air until you see who wins Tuna's Reunion Queen Contest!"
Tony-nominated Sears and Williams have been touring extensively with the Tuna productions for the past 22 years; they have been stage partners for 29 years. The two first met and worked together at San Antonio's First Repertory Company when Sears played Flute and Thisbe in A Midsummer Night's Dream; Williams appeared as Puck. Other productions in which the two have appeared together include Arsenic and Old Lace, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and The Foreigner, in which they toured between Tunas for over ten years.
Together, Sears and Williams received the Los Angeles Dramalogue Award for acting and writing in Greater Tuna, and for ensemble acting in A Tuna Christmas. The two were also nominated for Washington's Helen Hayes Award for their performances in A Tuna Christmas, and Sears received nominations in 1984 and 1988 for the Helen Hayes Award for his performance in Greater Tuna. A Tuna Christmas was selected to be published in Best Plays of 1995.
Red, White and Tuna features set design by Kevin Rupnik, costume design by Linda Fisher, lighting design by Root Choyce, and sound design by Ken Huncovsky. Charles H. Duggan, who for the past 21 years has produced Sears and Williams in the Tuna Trilogy, will present the play.
