Rebecca Luker, Julie Murney, et al. Set for American Songbook Project Workshops, 7/10-15

The American Songbook Project will launch a new program called "The Art of Song Performance," a workshop on July 10th-15th, 2011, in New York City. The summer intensive features classes in all styles of song performance, including Broadway, cabaret, jazz, and contemporary rock songs, taught by a host of luminaries from the theatre and cabaret community.

The workshop will include master classes with some of Broadway's finest singers, including Rebecca Luker (Mary Poppins, Phantom, Showboat, The Sound of Music), Adam Kantor (Rent), Chelsea Krombach (Promises, Promises), Julia Murney (Wicked), Meredith Patterson (42nd Street, White Christmas), Michael James Scott (The Book of Mormon), and singer/songwriter Katie Thompson.
Additional faculty includes Jen Bender (The Lion King), Judy Blazer (Titanic, Me and My Girl), Wendy Taucher (The Othello Project), composer Douglas Cohen (The Gig, No Way to Treat a Lady), (and Sheri Sanders (Rock the Audition). David Hancock Turner and Brett Schrier will serve as music directors for the week-long intensive.

The Art of Song Performance is open to students ages 14-18. Students of all vocal skill levels are encouraged to apply! Classes will be held at Shetler Studios, located at 244 West 54th Street in New York City. Tuition for the one-week workshop is $1,200. Tuition includes classes and lunch, which will be served on site.

Scholarships will be awarded to two students based on merit and need. Specific scholarship requirements to come.

The American Songbook Project was founded in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. It brings singers from Broadway and cabaret into New York City schools and community organizations to introduce young people to some of the beautiful melodies and meaningful lyrics of the American songs that are part of their heritage. These one-hour programs include not only American popular standards, but also some of the great new songs being written by today's talented composers. No matter where these young students travel around the world, American songs will no doubt be playing in the background. These songs are their birthright as American citizens and one of the glories of our country. Through these programs, we hope to be planting the seeds to develop new songwriters, performers, and if nothing else, new listeners.
