The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the opening of Hunter Gatherer. Artist Rebecca Lessner's photographs explore the process of surviving for those who live off the land. The exhibition is on view March 6-April 12, 2015, and it opens during a reception Friday, March 6, 5:30-8 p.m., at 707 Penn Gallery in the Cultural District.
Hunter Gatherer investigates the act of gathering and creating a direct relationship with the land. Lessner suggests that this relationship instills a respect for the land, a comprehension that cannot be grasped while picking over the shelves at a supermarket.
Lessner engages with humans working alongside the land and the processes they follow to prepare for the hunt: hours spent scouting, practicing, and the necessary extinguishing of life in order to live. Hunter Gatherer addresses the methodical thought that goes into the hunt, as well as feelings of reverence, gratitude, and concern associated with gathering one's own food.
"The opportunity to share the relationship my family and friends have had, care-taking and harvesting from the land, with Pittsburgh's cultural community is very heartening," says Lessner. "I hope art treaders walk away with a curiosity to reconnect with our land and their own gathering means."
Photographer Rebecca Lessner's images refer to the sacred, emotional connection people have with nature. Her past work has shown how nature overcomes man, and how man has reshaped the word nature. She now focuses her work on how man survives off the wilderness he has defined. She is based in York, PA.
