A reading of COOKING OIL a new play by Ugandan playwright Deborah Asiimwe will be presented at Siti Company space on May 28. The play is scheduled to premiere at the National Theatre of Uganda in Kampala, Uganda in the fall.
Directing the production is Emily Mendelsohn, with the help of a creative team including Shannon Scrofano, Qadriyyah Shamid-Deed and Miranda Wright.
COOKING OIL tells the story of Maria, a young girl whose dreams of returning to school drive her to sell foreign aid meant for free distribution to her village. Maria's difficult choices cost her life. Maria, her family, the corrupt local politicians, and the system of foreign aid itself are implicated in the search for an adequate response to this human loss.
Participating in the reading cast will be Elizabeth Pickett, Chandra Thomas, Kelechi Ezie, Condola Rashad, Thomas Pecinka, Dayon Davis, Fulya Peker, Jill Beckman, Michael Awusie, Kola Ogundiran, and Jill Beckman.
Asiimwe's other plays include FORGOTTEN WORLD, and APPOINTMENT WITH GOD.
