Variety reports that Broadway revivals of "Bye Bye Birdie" and "Merrily We Roll Along" are contenders for the 2009-10 season at the Roundabout Theater Company, with the "Birdie" production potentially opening the newly rebuilt Henry Miller's Theater.
Stephen Sondheim has been talking up an upcoming Roundabout staging of "Merrily," his 1981 musical written with book writer George Furth, at public appearances. And Roundabout's Todd Haimes has previously expressed his desire to produce the musical as well.
"Bye Bye Birdie" also has been mentioned regularly as potential programming for the Roundabout, although only recently has there been talk of the possibility that the 1960 hit might reopen the Miller's, set to become the Roundabout's third Broadway stage.
Roundabout would not confirm plans for either production. There are no shows on the schedule as of yet for Roundabout's 2009-10 season, which has not yet been announced.
