Las Vegas Philharmonic Musicians' Choice: Cabrera Conducts C.P.E. Bach, Debussy & Vaughn Williams

Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets start at $30

SPOTLIGHTING THE VIRTUOSITY of our esteemed musicians serves as inspiration for this robust program featuring pieces selected by members of your symphony orchestra. Our harpist, Kimberly Glennie shines on Claude Debussy's Danses sacrée et profane, which was premiered in 1904 and she says of the piece "These dances transport me to a mythical time and place. The opening movement is meditative bordering on the sacred, with a very emotional presence struggling to rise. The second is grace and joy and lovely movement, with a cadenza which speaks to me of another world, of yearning, and ends with a sense of soaring in flight. I love this piece because it gives voice to the magic and enchantment of the harp." Oboist Stephen Caplan demonstrates his command of his instrument in Vaughan Williams's Oboe Concerto composed in 1943. Caplan enthuses "This piece is one of my favorite works to play. It's the composer's highly personal response to World War II--beautiful, nostalgic, and intensely moving--the 1944 premier was delayed because of a threatened air raid. The three movements pay homage to the English pastoral tradition, but include searing virtuosic flourishes that seem to represent the intrusion of modern life on an earlier, more peaceful era." Cellist Andrew Smith solos on C.P.E. Bach's, Cello Concerto in A Major and shares, "The charming Cello Concerto in A Major, though rarely programmed, is worthy of having its place in the standard repertory. The second movement, marked "mesto" (sad), is especially notable, and is a good example of CPE Bach's use of Empfindsamer Stil (sensitive style)." Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis ends the evening of music chosen by our gifted group of musicians. Featuring a rising, organ-like melody used to create sombre effect, the piece was used in the 2003 film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

Las Vegas Philharmonic - Sound from Twilight (Torke, Schumann & Beethoven)

Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.

Ticket prices start at $30

TWILIGHT'S MAGICAL PROPERTIES and bittersweet marking of time resonate in this musical feast. Las Vegas resident and renowned composer Michael Torke's work returns this season with Sylvan. The piece, inspired by his summers spent in the Adirondacks harkens to the sites, smells and sounds forever imprinted on his memory. Comprised of three movements named in homage to the Eastern White Pine, Yellow Birch, and Red Spruce trees, he was intrigued by the notion that each of the three trees have their own distinct music. Alexi Kenney, who captivated all during a guest appearance in our 2015-16 season, returns to perform Robert Schumann's only Violin Concerto. Considered a significant composition from the twilight of his career, the concerto was written for acclaimed violinist, Joseph Joachim, and the finale is influenced in part by Schumann's acquaintance with a young Johannes Brahms. The work remained unknown to most for nearly 80 years. "Of the many great concerti available to violinists, Schumann's is an unjustly neglected jewel. Its intimate lyricism remains even in the most virtuosic passages, and its middle movement is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful pieces I can think of. I'm so excited to be bringing this wonderful work to life in Las Vegas," expresses Alexi Kenney. Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, part of the composer's late symphonic output closes the performance on a familiar note. The second movement's theme is widely used in film and commercial productions. His contemporaries considered it one of his more inspirational symphonies and Beethoven agreed, stating it was one of his greatest works.
