RED DOG HOWLS, Featuring Kathleen Chalfant, Receives 9/24 Opening at NYTW

New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) Artistic Director James C. Nicola and Managing Director William Russo have announced that Red Dog Howls, written by Alexander Dinelaris and directed by Ken Rus Schmoll, will begin performances Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at 7pm at NYTW, 79 East 4 Street, between Bowery and Second Avenue. Opening night is scheduled for Monday, September 24 at 7pm.

Award-winning actress Kathleen Chalfant (Angels in America, Wit) returns to New York Theatre Workshop in a landmark role, joining Florencia Lozano and Alfredo Narciso in the cast of this New York premiere.

A box of old letters and a father’s dying wish lead Michael Kiriakos to dig up the buried secrets of his family history. After a series of mysterious encounters with Rose, a captivating elderly Armenian woman, Michael eventually uncovers a past he never knew existed—one of exile, sacrifice and ultimately redemption. Red Dog Howls explores the horror of a forgotten genocide, the enduring strength of the human spirit and how the choices we make for our children will—for better or worse—reverberate for generations to come.

Alexander Dinelaris is currently working in the West End on the stage adaptation of The Bodyguard. His off-Broadway credits include Still Life (MCC); The Chaos Theories (Shotgun Theatre); In This, Our Time; Big Kids; Zanna Don't! (two Drama Desk nominations). Mr. Dinelaris has worked on Folding the Monster (staged readings with Rosie O'Donnell and Danny Aiello). Most recently, he worked with director Alejandro Gonzales-Innaritu (Babel, 21 Grams) on his newest film. Mr. Dinelaris attendEd Barry University, where he received the Mac McKindree scholarship for drama. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild and an NYTW Usual Suspect.

Ken Rus Schmoll’s recent credits include Luther, Telethon, Amazons and Their Men, Demon Baby (Clubbed Thumb), The Peripherals (Talking Band), Death Tax (Humana Festival), A Map of Virtue, Mark Smith, Aphrodisiac, The Internationalist (13P), Furee in Pins and Needles, Telephone (Foundry Theatre), Seven Homeless Mammoths Wander New England (Two River Theater), Middletown, The Internationalist (Vineyard Theatre), and Proserpina (Spoleto Festival USA). He is the recipient of two Obie Awards and co-chair of the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab.

Kathleen Chalfant’s credits include Farmyard, Investigation of the Murder in El Salvador, Far Away (NYTW), Dance with Me, Angels in America, Racing Demon, Wit, 9 Armenians, Talking Heads, Stories Left to Tell, Guantanamo, Painting Churches, Endgame, Savannah Bay. Regional credits include A Delicate Balance (Arena Stage and Yale), Ghosts (Hartford Stage), Top Girls (ACT Seattle); Film and TV: Isn't it Delicious, Duplicity, A Price Above Rubies, MURDER and murder (Yvonne Rainer); "The Guardian", "Law and Order” (all New York iterations), "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight" (HBO), "House of Cards."

Alfredo Narciso appeared at NYTW in The Misanthrope. Broadway credits include Motherf***er with the Hat and A Streetcar Named Desire. Off-Broadway includes Chimichangas and Zoloft (Atlantic), The Ugly One (Soho Rep/Play Co.), and The Drunken City (Playwrights Horizons). He has appeared regionally at A.R.T., Huntington, Magic, Long Wharf, Sundance Theater Lab, HBO Comedy Arts Festival, among others. Film and television include The Guys, Living & Dining, Elliot Loves, "Blue Bloods," "Unforgettable,” "Person of Interest," "L&O: Criminal Intent.”

Florencia Lozano has appeared at NYSF (Macbeth), LAByrinth (Dirty Story), LAB/MTC: (Where’s My Money?), MCC (Last Easter), National Actors’ Theatre (Right You Are…), Second Stage (Privilege), Summer Play Festival (Mimesophobia). Film and television: The Ministers, Veronika Decides To Die, Perfect Stranger, Deception, "Guilty," "Blue Bloods," "Royal Pains," "Ugly Betty," "Lipstick Jungle,” "Gossip Girl," “Law & Order: CI, SVU," "One Life To Live” (Téa Delgado). Her play, underneathmybed, produced at Rattlestick's Playwrights Theatre in 2010, won HOLA's award for Best New Play.

The scenic design for Red Dog Howls is by Marsha Ginsberg; costume design is by David C. Woolard; lighting design is by Tyler Micoleau; sound design is by Jane Shaw; fight coordinator is Scott Barrow; vocal coach is Ginger Eckert; production stage manager is Megan Smith.

NYTW supports artists in all stages of their careers by maintaining a series of workshop programs including work-in-progress readings, summer residencies, and minority artist fellowships. In 1991, NYTW received an OBIE Award for Sustained Achievement and in 2000 was designated to be part of the Leading National Theatres Program by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Red Dog Howls plays at New York Theatre Workshop, 79 East 4th Street, between second Avenue and Bowery. The regular performance schedule is Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00pm; Thursday and Friday at 8:00pm; Saturday at 3pm and 8pm; Sunday at 2pm and 7pm.
