RAGTIME had its world premiere in Toronto in 1996, and according to Toronto.com, the show "in all probability" will play Niagara-on-the-Lake as the Shaw Festival's headlining musical next year.
RAGTIME weaves together three distinctly American tales: that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant, and a daring young Harlem musician, all united by their courage, compassion, and belief in the promise of the future.
Their personal journeys come alive as historical figures offer guidance and diversion - including Harry Houdini, Henry Ford, Booker T. Washington, and the infamous Evelyn Nesbit. Together their stories celebrate the struggle between tradition and independence - all in the pursuit of the American Dream.
The original Broadway production opened in January 1998 led that year's Tony Awards with 13 nominations, closing in January 2000. In 2009, a revival played the Neil Simon Theatre for 65 performances.
