QST's Playwrights of Color Summit is a week-long residency that allows previously unproduced playwrights an opportunity to work exclusively on their plays. On Rayton Saturday night November 11th at 8 pm By A.K. Payne, directed by Awoye Timpo
The night Teddy was killed, he ran into the local barbershop asking for help; Lou, the town's favorite barber told him to be a man. On Rayton repositions the 1955 murder of Emmett Till into 1991. It tells the story of Lou, a closeted Black man whose reputation is put at stake by the racially-fueled murder of a neighborhood boy. Through the words of the Black women in the story, Yona, Lou's best friend and Ms. Marie, Teddy's mother and a symbol for Mamie Till--On Rayton evokes Audre Lorde when she wrote: "Your silence will not protect you."
