PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING DRAMA SWEAT
ARRIVES AT THE CITADEL

January 7, 2019

(EDMONTON) The Citadel Theatre will usher in the second half of its 2018/19 Season with Sweat, a gritty, relevant drama about the working class anger that helped take Donald Trump to the White House. The play is set in the factory town of Reading, Pennsylvania. For a group of life-long friends, a night at the local bar is one way to relieve the stress of a hard day on the factory lines in one of America's poorest cities. When tensions rise at work and picket lines are formed, friendships are tested in a struggle to survive.

Playwright Lynn Nottage spent two years interviewing people in Reading, Pennsylvania before writing the script, which won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Nottage, who also won the 2009 Pulitzer for Drama with her play Ruined, is the first woman to win the award twice. The Broadway production of Sweat ran from March to June in 2017, and earned three Tony Award nominations.

The Citadel production is presented in partnership with Arts Club Theatre Company in Vancouver, where the show had its Canadian Premiere in the fall of 2018. Sweat is directed by Valerie Planche, with set design by Shizuka Kai, costume design by Jenifer Darbellay, lighting design by Daniela Masellis, and sound design by Mishelle Cuttler.   The cast includes Edmonton performers Lora Brovold (Citadel's A Midsummer Night's Dream and A Few Good Men), Chris W. Cook (Citadel's Romeo and Juliet), Nicole St. Martin, and Ashley Wright (Citadel's A Christmas Carol, Mamma Mia!), plus Marci T. House (Vancouver's Bard on the Beach's Lysistrata, Timon of Athens) and Anthony Santiago (Citadel's Of Mice and Men, Peter Pan).

Sweat runs January 12 to February 3, 2019 in Shoctor Theatre. Tickets start at just $30 plus fees and GST. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the Citadel Box Office at 780.425.1820 or visit www.citadeltheatre.com.
