Pugilist Specialist transfers to 45 Below

The Riot Group's New York theatre debut PUGILIST SPECIALIST by Adriano Shaplin
will transfer to 45 Below at 45 Bleecker St Theaters from 3rd November after a
much lauded run at 59E59 Theaters. The new run is a limited engagement from
November 3rd to November 28th then the show will transfer to the Magic Theatre,
San Francisco for an extended run. Performances at Bleecker St run from Tuesday
to Saturday at 8pm; Sunday performances at 3pm and 7pm; and late Friday
performances at 10.30pm. Tickets are $35/ student and seniors are $15.

In addition to its US recent success, PUGILIST
SPECIALIST received universal acclaim earlier this year in the UK as 'the first
play directly inspired by the 'liberation of Iraq''' (John Peter, The Sunday
Times, London). Four highly-trained American marines are assigned the task of
eliminating a troublesome Middle Eastern leader. This psychological thriller
unfolds in a series of field recordings, detailing the planning, execution and
mishandling of modern political assassination, and exploring the mentalities of
people who give – and receive – orders.
As in Shaplin's previous works for The Riot Group,
all of which premiered at recent Edinbugrh Festivals (three of them winning
prestigious Fringe First Awards) PUGILIST SPECIALIST is an amalgam of themes and
sources bound together by intense, largely motionless performances and
the stylised linguistic cadence of a young
America, utilizing an array of literary influences, from Moby Dick to Marine
Corp Manuals. PUGILIST SPECIALIST went on from Scotland to two sell-out London
seasons and a 6 month-long UK tour.
The Riot Group is Stephanie Viola, Paul Schnabel, Drew Friedman and Adriano
Shaplin. The Riot Group is produced worldwide by Louise Chantal at Chantal Arts
+ Theatre, a recipient of two Theatre Investment Fund/Society of London Theatre
New Producers' Awards in 2004.
After this second New York run the play will transfer to San Francisco at the start of a national tour. The opening of PUGILIST SPECIALIST at Bleecker Street will coincide with London-based Oberon Books' worldwide publication of Adriano Shaplin's Trilogy of Fringe First Winning Plays - Wreck the Airline Barrier, Victory at the Dirt Palace and Pugilist Specialist.
