The Public Theater's Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Mara Manus have announced that The Public is taking applications for the 2006 Shakespeare Lab, a thirteen-week acting intensive scheduled to take place May 30th through August 27th, 2006. The application deadline is Friday, March 31st.
"Now entering its twelfth year, the Shakespeare Lab presents a unique opportunity for actors to develop their classical skills. Emphasis is placed upon the individual actor's process and needs in relation to the magnificent challenges offered by the writings of Shakespeare. The Lab immerses the actor in Shakespeare's plays and language under the instruction of some of the most respected teachers of classical theater in New York and the world," state press notes.
Previous faculty for the Shakespeare Lab has included: Christopher Bayes,
Michael Cumpsty, John Dias, Deborah Hecht, Orlando Pabotoy, J. Steven White, and Janet Zarish. Past guest artists have included:
Brian Bedford,
Oskar Eustis,
Dana Ivey,
Mark Lamos,
Liev Schreiber, Jordan Thaler and
George C. Wolfe.
Numerous graduates of the Shakespeare Lab have gone on to secure roles on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in regional theaters, in addition to work in film and television. Graduates of the Shakespeare Lab include: Varín Ayala, who was cast as Don Armado in
Love's Labour's Lost at the Cherry Lane Theatre; Natalie Gold, who went on to understudy
Kristen Johnston in the 2002 Shakespeare in the Park production of
Twelfth Night; Nealy Glenn, who went on to appear in a production of
Two Gentlemen of Verona at South Coast Repertory; Dale Ho, who was cast in the 2004 Shakespeare in the Park production of
As You Like It; and Michael Littig, who secured roles with the touring company of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey.
