Public Auction to Have Sale of Rare Collection Of Thomas Day Furniture, 12/7

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C., Nov. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ Leland Little Auction & Estate Sales, Ltd. announces the public auction of seven important, fresh to the market, rare pieces of furniture by Thomas Day. Descended through the Hunt Family, these well-documented masterpieces were taken out of the home they had been in since the mid-nineteenth century. These seven pieces will be sold on Saturday, December 7 th in Hillsborough, NC, as part of the gallery's three-day Winter Catalogue Auction.

Thomas Day, a master cabinet maker and skilled artisan and architectural woodworker, was a free man of color living in North Carolina during the pre-Civil War era. Born in 1801 in Virginia, he settled in Caswell County in the late 1820s and opened his shop on Main Street in Milton.

In 1975, the North Carolina Museum of History held an exhibition of Day's work. Four of the pieces from the Mabel Hunt collection to be sold on December 7 th were included in the exhibit with the following as their introduction in the exhibition catalogue, "The Hunt pieces were made by Day for the Hunt House when it was built in the early part of the nineteenth century. Grandson Holmes Glenn Hunt is the sixth generation of Hunts to live in the old place which still houses the Day furniture." (p. 45).

Previews will be held on Saturday, November 30 th from 10:00AM to 3:00PM and Friday, December 6 th from 10:00AM to 6:00PM.
