A New York Times Magazine profile of HAMILTON producer Jeffrey Seller confirms previously announced plans for the first American touring companies and a West End production, and also announces plans for additional international companies of Lin-Manuel Miranda's revolutionary hip-hop musical.
As previously announced, the first production of HAMILTON outside of New York will begin performances on September 27th, 2016 at Chicago's PrivateBank Theatre. It will be a "sit-down" show, meaning it is expected to run for a year or more.
Ultimately, there may be as many as seven HAMILTON companies, in addition to the one on Broadway, performing at the same time in multiple American and international cities.
As previously reported by BroadwayWorld, Seller is working with producer Cameron Mackintosh on a 2017 West End opening. This will be followed by companies in Continental Europe and Australia.
Seller stresses that since HAMILTON requires no special effects or an elaborate set, casting is everything. Each road company will be cast with the same diversity displayed in the current Broadway company, with all roles, excepting King George, going to actors of color.
