Fans of the short-lived and relatively obscure Stephen Sondheim/Arthur Laurents musical comedy ANYONE CAN WHISTLE are now witness to a miracle of our very own - the long-awaited JAY Records complete recording of ANYONE CAN WHISTLE has been announced to be completed and a generous thirteen-minute-plus sample from the recording has now, at long, long last been released!
John Barrowman, Maria Friedman and Julia McKenzie - three truly tremendous triple-threats, to say the least - lead the recording, which was originally captured in the studio more than ten years ago and has now finally begun to be reaching final mixing stages.
The first preview portion of the album to be released is one of the score's most well-known and best-loved signature tunes, "Everybody Says Don't", which has famously been covered by Barbra Streisand, Liz Callaway and many others over the decades since the musical's 1964 bow.
Following a spirited singing of the song proper, we are then treated to a short dialogue scene between Barrowman - as Hapgood - and Friedman - as Fay Apple - showcasing the sparkling dialogue of Laurents, followed by an exhilarating extended ballet sequence, orchestrated to the nth by Don Walker.
No official release date has yet been set for the complete recording of ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, but the official site now lists it as "forthcoming," so we can certainly still hold out hope it will arrive someday soon.
