Following its world premiere production of Marisa Wegrzyn's The Butcher of Baraboo, Second Stage Theatre will continue its Second Stage Theatre Uptown Festival with the world premiere of Josh Tobiessen's Election Day, directed by Jeremy Dobrish.
Election Day will feature Michael Ray Escamilla, Halley Feiffer (subUrbia), Adam Green (All This Intimacy), Lorenzo Pisoni, and Katharine Powell (The Water's Edge, The Voysey Inheritance). Previews begin July 16; opening night is Wednesday, August 1.
Election Day will be presented at Second Stage Theatre's uptown home, the McGinn/Cazale Theatre on Broadway at 76th Street.
"It's Election Day, and Adam knows his over-zealous girlfriend will never forgive him if he fails to vote. But when his sex starved sister, an eco-terrorist, and a mayoral candidate willing to do anything for a vote all show up, Adam finds that making that quick trip to the polls might be harder than he thought. Election Day is a hilarious dark comedy about the price of political (and personal) campaigns," as stated in press materials.
Tobiessen's plays have been produced in the Baldwin New Play Festival at USCD and in Ireland in the Galway Arts Festival and Dublin Fringe Festival. He has studied at the Improv Olympic Theatre in Chicago, and the National University of Ireland. Josh has a B.A. from Grinnell College and is currently completing his final year of the M.F.A Playwriting program at UCSD.
Dobrish's off-Broadway directing credits include In the Wings at the Promenade, Drift for the '06 NYMF, Spain for the '06 Summer Play Festival, Ted Kaczynski Killed People with Bombs at the Clurman, The Joys of Sex at Variety Arts (Excellence in Directing award - NYC Fringe Festival), Class Mothers '68, (Drama Desk nomination, Best Solo Performance), and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) at the Century Center.
Election Day will have scenic design by Steven Capone, costume design by Mattie Ulrich, lighting design by Michael Gottlieb, and sound design by Jill BC Du Boff.Tickets are $40 and can be purchased by calling the Second Stage Theatre Box Office at 212-246-4422 or online at www.2ST.com.
