Playwright and Director Emily Mann Featured at Shop Talk, March 6

Emily Mann, Artistic Director of the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey, will make a rare personal appearance in New York City on Monday evening March 6 at the Drama Book Shop's intimate Arthur Seelen Theatre (250 West 40th Street).

Mann's appearance is in connection with the ongoing series, "Shop Talk", a co-production between the Drama Book Shop (www.dramabookshop.com) and The Lynne Thigpen/Bobo Lewis Foundation (www.ltblf.org), a non-profit organization devoted to mentoring the next generation of Broadway theatre professionals. "Shop Talk" evenings will be reminiscent of "Inside The Actor's Studio" but in a more intimate and immediate setting. Rozanne Gates, Program Director for the foundation, is the host/moderator and the audience is invited to ask questions.

Mann, now in her sixteenth season as Artistic Director of the McCarter Theatre is best known for having written and directed Having Our Say, adapted from the book by Sarah L. Delany and A. Elizabeth Delany with Amy Hill Hearth. Having Our Say had its world premiere at the McCarter Theatre prior to its successful run on Broadway, a national tour and a production at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Broadway production was nominated for three Tony awards, an Outer Critics and a Drama Desk award. Mann also wrote the teleplay for Having Our Say which aired as a Kraft Premiere Movie on CBS TV April 18, 1999 and received a Peabody Award, a Christopher Award and a nomination for outstanding achievement intelevision and radio by the Writers Guild of America.

In addition, she wrote and directed Meshugah, adapted from the story by IsaacBashevis Singer, which had its world premiere at McCarter and was recently produced off-Broadway. Her play, Greensboro (A Requiem), had its world premiere at McCarter in 1997. Her other McCarter directing credits include: Miss Witherspoon (McCarter and Playwrights Horizon), The Bells, Anna in The Tropics (McCarter and Broadway), Uncle Vanya (also adapted), and The Tempest, while she received an Obie Award for her direction of the New York run of All Over. Her play Still Life premiered at the Goodman Theatre, and opened Off-Broadway under her direction in 1981, winning six Obie Awards, including Distinguished Playwriting and Distinguished Directing. A recipient of the prestigious Hull-Warriner Award and the Edward Albee Last Frontier Directing Award. Mann is a member of the Dramatists Guild and serves on its Council. A collection of her plays, Testimonies: Four Plays, has been published by Theatre Communications Group, Inc.

Tickets for all "Shop Talk" evenings can be purchased on-line at www.ltblf.org. General admission is $20, $10 for students with ID. Tickets are also available at the door the night of the event. The Drama Book Shop is located at 250 West 40th Street and "Shop Talk" begins at 7:30 PM.
