Piñataland - NYC's Best "Dark Old Weird History Orchestrette" (Village Voice) - presents American Folklore Night at Barbès in Brooklyn, 11/11/11.

The vastness of American Folklore is far too big to cram into one evening, but Piñataland is going to try anyway with an evening of music and short films devoted to stories and songs that conjure dreams of the American past.

Piñataland's new album, Hymns for the Dreadful Night garnered rave reviews from music critics, bloggers & radio hosts from Brooklyn to Oklahoma, New Jersey to Texas,Pennsylvania to England and the Netherlands. Critics are beginning to cotton to their new collection of darkly romantic tunes about digging up the corpse of Thomas Paine, godless 1670s Brooklyn, and the atom bomb.

Opening for Piñataland is The Weal and The Woe who will bring their special mix of vintage and original country and gospel. The Weal and the Woe's Russell Scholl, a celebrated film curator in his own right, will then present short films including the current festival favorite "Pioneer" by Texas director David Lowery starring Will Oldham, about the most epic bedside story of all time.

Barbès  is located 376 9th street at 6th Avenue, Brooklyn New York.  The performance will be on Friday, 11/11/11, 8 p.m - midnight.  It will include Americana Folklore Night, an evening of music and film with Piñataland, The Weal and the Woe and a short films including "Pioneer" by director David Lowery. Tickets are $10 (strongly) suggested donation.

SCHEDULE: 8:00 pm., The Weal & The Woe 9:30 p.m., Short films including "Pioneer" by director David Lowery. 10:00 p.m., Piñataland (Doug Stone, David Wechsler, Robin Aigner, Bill Gerstel & Gerald Menke) perform tunes from their new album, "Hymns for the Dreadful Night".

Here's a free download of one of the tunes from HYMNS FOR THE DREADFUL NIGHT, "Island of Godless Men" : http://music.pinataland.com/track/island-of-godless-men

Island of Godless Men is about the Dutchman Jasper Danckaerts, who visited Brooklyn in 1670 and complained about the "godlessness" of the smoking and drinking people of Brooklyn. This is his triumphant protest march to the apocalypse.
