Manila, Philippines--While emerald green confetti were slowly falling from midair and soap bubbles floated right near the stage door at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, photographer Jude Ng and videographer JM Ballaran captured on their cameras on closing night, Sunday, March 9, a large crowd of Filipino fans of WICKED singing in unison one of most famous duets from the musical, "For Good." For the fans, it was their "musical" way of showing how grateful they were for the Australasian touring cast, led by Jemma Rix (Elphaba), Suzie Mathers (Glinda), Steve Danielsen (Fiyero), Emily Cascarino (Nessarose), and Edward Grey (Boq), who starred in the sensational seven-week run of WICKED in Manila.
Together with ensemble players Mitch Fistrovic, Tom Handley, Matt Holly, Daniel Assetta, Christopher Scalzo, and Sophie Wright, the international touring cast of WICKED will reopen the megamusical in Melbourne's Regent Theatre on Wednesday, May 7, before playing in Sydney and Brisbane, and in Auckland, New Zealand in September. Lucy Durack ("Legally Blonde," "Wicked") will reprise the role of Glinda, replacing Mathers.
WICKED's limited run in Manila was produced by Marc Platt, David Stone, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt, and John Frost. The production has featured music and lyrics by Broadway icon Stephen Schwartz, book by Winnie Holzman, direction by two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello, and musical staging by Tony winner Wayne Cilento. Presenters were Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, David Atkins Enterprises, 105.9 Radio High, and Concertus Manila, alongside VISA and Smart Infinity.
Winner of 50 major awards, including a Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, WICKED tells the untold story of the Witches of Oz in a grand scale production: Long before Dorothy dropped in the Land of Oz, two other girls forge a heartwarming friendship: Elphaba, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery, and misunderstood; Glinda, is beautiful, ambitious, and very popular. WICKED follows their remarkable odyssey, and how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch.
Special thanks to Toni Bufete and Petition to Bring WICKED to Manila.
