At the April 29th performance of
The Wedding Singer, Robbie Hart's marriage proposal to waitress Julia wasn't the only one taking place onstage. Audience member Andrew Wolfe, of Whitestone, Queens, asked Debbie Hirsch to be his wife.
The onstage proposal--which had been arranged by a few phone calls and letters to the show's management--was announced by
Wedding Singer star
Stephen Lynch. After saying, "At this performance of
The Wedding Singer, will Andrew Wolfe please stand up?," Lynch beckoned Wolfe and Hirsch onstage to the shocked delight of the musical's audience. The similarly surprised and happy Hirsch immediately accepted. Wolfe had previously been inspired to propose in such an unusual way when a friend of his proposed to his girlfriend at a wrestling match. In addition, his family is fond of taking road trips--and always brings along the soundtrack to the movie version of
The Wedding Singer, one of his favorite films. Wolfe and Hirsch--who have been dating for 16 months--plan to get married on Sunday, September 17th.
The
Wedding Singer, which opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on April 27th, is based on the 1998 film, which starred Adam Sandler
and Drew Barrymore. The show features music by Matthew Sklar, with
lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Tim Herlihy and Chad Beguelin.
John Rando directs the musical, while Tony Award-winner Rob Ashford is behind the choreography. The Wedding Singer stars Lynch, Laura Benanti, Amy Spanger, Felicia Finley, Rita Gardner, Matthew Saldivar and Kevin Cahoon.
