The world premiere of The Orphan Singer, a new musical by Barbara Zinn Krieger based on the award-winning book by Emily Arnold McCully and featuring music by Antonio Vivaldi, will kick off the 10th anniversary year of Making Books Sing, the New York-based company dedicated to turning books for young readers into musical works for the stage. The show will have performances in the Bronx at Lehman Stages (Lovinger Theatre) from January 24th through 28th; in Queens at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center from February 1st through 4th; in Brooklyn at the Goldstein Performing Arts Center from February 6th through 10th; and in Manhattan at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Symphony Space February from February 12th through 13th.
"The Orphan Singer--a full-scale, multimedia musical--will feature Vivaldi's timeless vocal and chamber music - such as 'The Four Seasons' and selections from his operas and oratorios - performed live by a string quartet and harpsichord on Baroque period instruments. Additionally, still images of masterpieces by Venetian painters (such as Canaletto) and video-footage of Venice's magnificent architecture and canals will be integrated into the performance," according to press notes. For tickets and more information, visit www.makingbookssing.org.Photos by Carol Rosegg
