The Douglas J. Cohen musical THE GIG, was commercially released on CD on August 12 through Jay Records. On August 18 at 6:00pm, there was a CD launch at Barnes & Noble on West 66th Street. The cast was there to perform and sign CDs following a panel discussion with Frank Gilroy, Sheldon Harnick, Douglas J. Cohen and moderated by Peter Filichia.
The CD features Tony Award winners, Karen Ziemba and Michele Pawk, and Broadway favorites, William Parry (Sunday in the Park with George), Charles Pistone (Most Happy Fella), James Judy (Big River), Michael McCormick (Curtains), Steve Routman (The Fantasticks), Stephen Berger (The Pajama Game), plus new cast members Herndon Lackey (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Michael James Leslie (Little Shop of Horrors), and Jill Paice (Curtains, West End's Gone With the Wind).
The late Michael Gibson orchestrated the score with a seven piece jazz band. He was one of Broadway's most gifted, having orchestrated the last six shows of Kander and Ebb including Cabaret.
THE GIG is based on a film by Pulitzer Prize winner Frank D. Gilroy which starred Wayne Rogers and Cleavon Little. Sheldon Harnick, the two-time Tony Award winning lyricist (Fiddler on the Roof, Fiorello), has written the liner notes in the accompanying booklet.
The Boston Globe called THE GIG "a funny and touching new musical."
The recording is from a one-night concert at The York Theatre Company in 2006.
