AMERICAN HORROR STORY's Angela Bassett, who has appeared on Broadway herself in THE MOUNTAINTOP and JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE, attended last night's performance of ALADDIN and stopped backstage to pose for a photo with 'Genie' James Monroe Iglehart. Check it out below!
Disney's ALADDIN, the hit Broadway musical, just celebrated its second anniversary last Sunday at The New Amsterdam Theatre, and seven of the show's original stars have extended their contracts through February 19th, 2017. Those extending include Adam Jacobs (ALADDIN), Tony Award nominee Jonathan Freeman (Jafar), Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart (Genie), Courtney Reed (Jasmine), Brian Gonzales (Babkak), Clifton Davis (Sultan) and Don Darryl Rivera (Iago). The seven have led the company since the production opened on Broadway.
Also continuing in their principal roles are Steel Burkhardt (Kassim) and James Moye (standby Jafar/Sultan). As previously announced, ALADDIN recently welcomed new principal cast members Brad Weinstock as Omar and Major Attaway as the standby for Genie/Babkak/Sultan to the company.
Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, ALADDIN features music by Tony Award and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Sister Act), lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid), three-time Tony Award and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice (Evita, Aida) and four-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), with a book by Beguelin, and is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw, who makes history this spring as director-choreographer of four concurrent Broadway musicals.
ALADDIN, adapted from the Disney film and centuries-old folktales including "One Thousand and One Nights," is brought to fresh theatrical life in this bold new musical. ALADDIN's journey sweeps audiences into an exotic world of daring adventure, classic comedy and timeless romance. This new production features a full score, including the five cherished songs from the Academy Award-winning soundtrack and more written especially for the stage.
ALADDIN is designed by seven-time Tony-winning scenic designer Bob Crowley, five-time Tony-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz, two-time Tony-winning costume designer Gregg Barnes and sound designer Ken Travis.
