Photo Flash: Sneak Peek at The Marin Show's ART OF THE AMERICAS Exhibition, Opening 2/21

The Marin Show: Art of the Americas, which showcases antique American Indian, Pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial and Contemporary American Indian Art Show takes place SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21st - SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd. Scroll down for a sneak peek at the exhibition!

Marin Show: Art of the Americas brings together the passion of the country's top dealers and artists, with collectors, and those interested in exploring the rich cultures of the Americas. Exhibited art includes jewelry, textiles, baskets, pottery, beadwork, sculpture, photography, paintings, books, and more, offering quality material for first time buyers and seasoned collectors.

The 2015 Marin Show will feature a special exhibit and symposium titled "Yesterday and Today" produced by the California Indian Basketweavers' Association (CIBA) in association with the California Academy of Sciences. A major traveling exhibition of California Indian basketry, "Yesterday and Today" will compare 150 historic - seldom displayed - California Indian baskets from the Collection of the California Academy of Sciences with 45 contemporary baskets created by CIBA Master Weavers, demonstrating that California Indian basketry is the finest art ever produced in our state.

CIBA artists will be present with interactive experiences including plant fiber preparation -- "what goes before the basket," -- as well as opportunities for direct interaction with "Contemporary Weavers at Work." Special "Hands-On Basketry Activities" will engage young show visitors and their families, eager to learn firsthand about the basketry traditions of California Indians.

A special book signing of In Search of Nampeyo: The Early Years, 1876-1892 by Steve Elmore, presents a unified view of the early life and work of the famed Hopi potter, Nampeyo. "Extremely well researched and a major original contribution to the study of southwestern Indian art and Hopi Pottery in particular....No one has done anything of this scope or importance..." - Garrick Bailey, University of Tulsa

A special lecture "The Creative Miracle of Eskimo and Inuit Art...from 2,500 years ago to the Present," will be presented by the Friends of Ethnic Art, featuring Roslyn Tunis, Consulting Curator at the de Young Fine Arts Museum and Nelson H. Graburn, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, Curator Emeritus at the Heard Museum. They will discuss the history of Eskimo art through the explosion of Inuit art in the 1940s and 1950s.

For over three decades, Kim Martindale has produced many of the country's most prestigious and successful historic art shows. In addition, since 1994, he's brought the same professionalism and enthusiasm to a series of contemporary fine art shows most notably, The Los Angeles Art Show.

CIBA is a non-profit organization established in 1992 with approximately 1,000 members statewide. It provides opportunities for weavers to convene, learn, exchange information and showcase their work and also offers non-members educational opportunities throughout the year, such as "Tending the Wild - The Workshop" which focuses on California Indian environmental stewardship methods that come before the basket.

A special Preview Event on Friday, February 20th 5 pm to 7 pm benefits Homeward Bound of Marin (Homeward Bound of Marin). Location is the Marin Center and Embassy Suites in San Rafael, CA.
