Democratic presidential nominee for the 1972 presidential election, which he lost in a landslide to President Richard M. Nixon, McGovern was a World War II hero, historian, author, ambassador, U.S. representative and U.S. senator for South Dakota and liberal idealist opposed to the Vietnam War.
McGovern has published a dozen books, including his most recent "What It Means to Be a Democrat" in 2011. McGovern was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000 and shared the World Food Prize with Bob Dole in 2008.Photo Credit: Walter McBride
