According to published reports, George McGovern passed away on October 21. He was 90 years old. BroadwayWorld brings you photos of the famed politician below.

Democratic presidential nominee for the 1972 presidential election, which he lost in a landslide to President Richard M. Nixon, McGovern was a World War II hero, historian, author, ambassador, U.S. representative and U.S. senator for South Dakota and liberal idealist opposed to the Vietnam War.
 
McGovern has published a dozen books, including his most recent "What It Means to Be a Democrat" in 2011. McGovern was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000 and shared the World Food Prize with Bob Dole in 2008.
