Broadway Rhythm and Booze, a cabaret series created as a platform to highlight the soulful talents of the Broadway community, took place August 29th at Tillman's Bar & Lounge, 165 West 26th Street (between 6th and 7th avenue). Evoking the Harlem jazz clubs of yesteryear, this swank Flatiron District lounge pays homage to musical legends and has a reputation for booking the most desirable jazz, hip-hip and Motown acts. Headline talent included Rebecca Naomi Jones (American Idiot, Passing Strange), Darren Lorenzo (Smokey Joe's Café, Dreamworks' Madagascar), and Douglas Lyons (Book of Mormon, Dreamgirls). Music Director, Steven Jamail has conducted tribute concerts for Chita Rivera, Cyndi Lauper and Queen Latifah and has performed with jazz legend Chick Corea, the Houston Symphony and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Jamail is joined by Colin Dean (Bass) and Jeremy Yaddaw (Drums).
"N+N Productions is thrilled to be back at Tillman's to present the fourth installment of the Broadway Rhythm and Booze series, that celebrates soul music and live performance," said Nikole Vallins and Natalie Malotke, Producers. "The stage at Tillman's is an ideal venue for Broadway and emerging artists from a variety of disciplines to debut their own material and artistry. With the support of the Broadway community, we are able to reinvent Cabaret in New York and introduce a new family of rising stars."
Tillman's owner, Lesly Bernard, former co-owner of celebrity haunts Clementine and Taj and partner at Pravda, modeled the upscale eatery after a 1970's underground speakeasy. The venue is outfitted in authentic vintage furniture, funky wall designs that depict jazz legends from B.B King to Parliament and boasts a menu known for nine varieties of specialty grilled cheeses. Fan favorites include Brie And Spiced Pear with black truffle butter, French Onion Soup with roasted garlic & herbs, gruyere, caramelized onion compote, Vegan Mozzarella with tofu mozzarella, roasted vegetables and pesto and Smoked Salmon And Cream Cheese with red onion and french capers.Photo Credit: Nick Gaswirth
