The word "iconic" is bandied about with frequency these days, but last night's premiere installment of "Lorna's Pink Party" at Birdland was the happy scene for several recreations of historic showbiz moments. They'll all do it again next Monday, October 21 - but last night, hostess Lorna Luft and sister Liza Minnelli joined forces in a thrilling blast-from-the-past performance that left the jam-packed crowd cheering, stomping and begging for more. Another sister duo, Liz and Ann Hampton Callaway, took part in the retelling of some memorable musical moments. Television star Marcia Strassman, Broadway leading men Norm Lewis and Nick Adams, and concert/nightclub singers Kelly King and Jim Caruso (with backing by William Blake and Trevor McQueen) dazzled the room with very special performances. Musical director/arranger Colin Freeman led a spectacular band of musicians and backup singers who accompanied the starry cast with great style.
The occasion was the first of two intimate evenings of cabaret benefitting The Actors Fund's Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative and Tower Cancer Research Foundation's Dr. Philomena McAndrew Fund. The two concerts, part of the Broadway at Birdland concert series, sold out in record time, raising over $100,000.
