Gay men and showtunes? Who knew? It could happen. In fact, it did, as the Tony Award and Two-Time Grammy Award-Winning actress and ultimate DREAMGIRL, Jennifer Holliday, joined the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles in a very special engagement consisting of both classic and recent musical numbers that have defined the boards of the Great White Way.
Including contemporary masterpieces from The Lion King, Young Frankenstein, Spring Awakening, Aida, as well as classic Broadway hits such as The King & I, Zorba, Milk and Honey, South Pacific, Company, Passion, Follies, Steel Pier, and, of course, Dreamgirls!
Jennifer Holliday is a legend of the musical theatre and a veteran of soul music. Jennifer's ardent fans have remained faithful to her for more than two decades since her first performance in "Dreamgirls." Jennifer is a "Singer's Singer." She's an exciting performer who delivers her songs with great passion. She's a vocal power-house who chews on every lyric, infusing them with emotional statements. Whether she's singing at the White House, the Pops Symphony, the Broadway Stage, a Baptist Church or just an Evening of Love Songs and Classic Jazz Standards, Jennifer Holliday continues to inspire a whole new generation of admirers of all ages. Her Voice, Her Song, Her Story and Her Spirit are "a True Gift from God" to music lovers all over the world!
For thirty years the men of GMCLA have been telling their compelling stories: tales of unique childhoods, coming out, facing scorn and discrimination, making love, finding their place in the world and singing out for equality for everyone. For over 30 years, the Chorus has built an international reputation for musical excellence while remaining deeply rooted in service to the Los Angeles community. GMCLA has more than doubled in size to 226 singers, added professional and artistic staff, toured nationally and internationally, released thirteen compact discs, commissioned more than 300 new works and arrangements and appeared frequently on national television. The Chorus membership donates over 60,000 volunteer hours annually to make GMCLA's mission of musical excellence and community partnership a reality.
The event took place on Saturday, June 27th, 2008.
