Tony and Emmy Award-winning production designer Derek McLane returns to the 2016 OSCARS for a fourth consecutive year, after earning an Emmy nomination for his work on each of the previous telecasts and winning in 2014. This year, McLane has collaborated with Swarovski to add show-stopping crystal pieces to the stage at the Dolby Theater. Below, BWW brings you a first look at the sets which include:
Over 200,000 Swarovski crystals were used for 35 design elements, including a massive crystal focal piece weighing more than 20,000 pounds and a crystal centerpiece weighing more than 7,700 pounds
The proscenium itself is decorated with 27,120 crystals
Over 1,600 man hours have been spent creating this year's crystal stage décor
Swarovski crystals have been used in the production design of the Oscars set and stage for nine years and counting.
McLane's television credits also include "The Wiz Live!," "Peter Pan Live!" and "The Sound of Music Live!" Additionally, McLane has designed sets for several acclaimed Broadway shows; he has received four Tony Award® nominations and won for his work on 33 Variations (2009). The 88th Oscars ® will be held on Sunday, February 28, at the Dolby Theatre ® at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
