As temperatures are rising all over Houston, Theatre Under the Stars' TUTS Underground is cooking up a musical treat that is as Texan as Pecan Pie (which is the state pie of Texas). TUTS Underground is producing the Texas Premiere of HANDS ON A HARDBODY, a musical based on the 1997 documentary by the same title. Following ten contestants as they compete to win a Nissan hardbody truck in Longview, Texas, the musical features a book by Doug Wright, music by Trey Anastasio of Phish, and music and lyrics by Amanda Green. Additionally, The TUTS Underground production is filled with local favorites in the cast and features the truck from the 2013 Broadway production of the musical.
On June 1, 2014, BroadwayWorld - Houston was invited to attend a rehearsal of HANDS ON A HARDBODY. The cast, which has only been rehearsing together since Tuesday, May 27, 2014, is hard at work and their efforts are already paying off. We were treated to a complete run-through of Act I, and things are already clicking together nicely. We also got to bring our camera along to snap some photos and give our readers a sneak peek at the exciting production.
The Texas Premiere of HANDS ON A HARDBODY, produced by TUTS Underground, runs in the Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 800 Bagby Street, Houston, 77002 from June 12 to 22, 2014. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. For tickets and more information, please visit http://www.tutsunderground.com or call (713) 558-8887.
