The Media Theatre's production of "Chicago" has opening night Friday September 30 after three preview performances. With Broadway's Justin Guarini (American Idiot, Women on The Verge) as charismatic attorney Billy Flynn, the musical plays through November 6. Check out a photo of Guarini in action below!

Guarini, who became a household name as the season one runner-up on "American Idol", shares the stage with Hillary Elliott as Velma, Alicia Jayne Kelly as Roxie, and Demetria Bailey as Matron 'Mama' Morton in the satirical look at the criminal justice system. The show is directed by three time Barrymore Award winner Jennie Eisenhower.

"Chicago" takes place during the Prohibition Era. Music and lyrics are from the legendary team of John Kander and Fred Ebb as the concept of 'celebrity crime' is skewered with a humorous bite. Bob Fosse wrote the book with Ebb, and the entire concept was based on the 1926 play "Chicago" focusing on actual crimes reported by Maurine Dallas Watkins. The original production of the musical opened in 1975. The show was revived in 1996, and in 2002 it became an Academy Award winning film.

Justin Guarini joins the list of celebrated actors who have performed on The Media Theatre stage. Last season, Emmy winner Wanda Sykes had audiences laughing as Miss Hannigan in Artistic Director Jesse Cline's production of "Annie". Tony winners Betty Buckley, Judy Kaye, and Il Divo's David Miller, as well as Tony nominated Ann Crumb, have also performed at the Philadelphia region's professional music theatre.
