Photo Flash: English National Opera's On the Town

On the Town returns this Friday, April 20, to the London Coliseum for 20 performances only until May, 25 2007. With a cast and orchestra of 105, it is the biggest musical in London.

The full principal cast of On the Town is: Helen Anker (Ivy Smith), Rodney Clarke (Master of Ceremonies), Joshua Dallas (Gabey), Janine Duvitski (Lucy Schmeeler), Alison Jiear (Dolores Dolores), Ryan Molloy (Ozzie), Caroline O'Connor (Hildy Esterhazy), Broadway's The Little Mermaid star Sean Palmer (Chip), Lucy Schaufer (Claire de Loone), Andrew Shore (Judge Pitkin) and June Whitfield (Madame Maude P. Dilly). On 24 April, 17, 18, 19, 22, 23 and 25 May, Judge Pitkin is played by Graeme Danby.

With music by Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story), book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green (Singin' in the Rain) and based on an idea by Jerome Robbins, the story of On the Town was famously filmed by MGM starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra.   The musical is directed by Jude Kelly, choreographed by Stephen Mear, conducted by Simon Lee, designed by Robert Jones with lighting Mark Henderson.  "Set in 1940s New York, 3 sailors on shore leave embark on the biggest adventure of their lives with just 24 hours to find fun and romance in the world's most exciting city…," state press notes.
