If fabric could talk, its very threads would mention the designs by Mischka Velasco who brings new artistry to the fashion scene. Fluid edit was prominent during Velasco's Fall 2014 Fashion Show on Monday February 10, a manifestation of her concept "String Theory" was featured on day five of New York Fashion Week. Her show featured the bold singular red string and an array of multi-colored embroidered strings that was playfully weaved across each unique runway look; all magically relating, but uniquely different through this young designer's vision and inspiration. Highlight colors and fabrics from Mischka Velasco's 4th seasonal show included; scarlet, camel, electric blue, crimson, ivory, grey and black wool and cashmere coats emblazoned with the signature string theory symbol, a part mini asymmetrical length camel wool cocktail coat dress with the red string touch, the scooped out electric blue wool full body cocoon coats, taupe cashmere body hugging bell sleeve sweater dress with one floret cuff as her signature touch, turquoise raw silk dupioni evening gowns and smart black taffeta minis adorned with large pave opaline Swarovski crystals, to name a few. The show stopper was a multiple spaghetti string pink and gold fleck floor length pailette evening gown. Highlights for men included silk men's shirting with bound buttons, modernized Thai style shouldered coats. Outfits were two-toned and patchworks of dual fabrics, cut on the vertical or the diagonal. Velasco showed an advance on modern design, not wallowing in the familiar for those educated in couture.
"I need to feel the fabric and work in tandem as to what it's saying to me in the draping process. That is where my inspiration evolves." says Velasco. The runway models wore their hair wrapped in tight braids across the crown line with full curled hair extensions in the models hair color. "For Makeup Fall 2014, in particular, there were bold glitter statements similar to traffic light systems creating a cat's eye effect with rhinestone encrusted lashes for dramatic catwalk effects."
The current Miss USA Erin Brady sat front row with Actress/International Model Hana Nitsche, former Supermodel Angeliko Kallio, an incognito Rap Recording Artist/Grammy songwriter, and rising star burlesque dancer Honeysuckle at the Top of the Garden show, which was crammed to bursting with fashionistas.
About Mischka Velasco: Mischka was born some time ago in the Panama Canal Zone. She lived in a variety of places around the world before returning home to the United States. She grew up in New York, realized that she loved the fashion business and felt that she had something to say through it. Mischka trained at FIT and while there became involved with independent labels and designers. She lived on the west coast for some time where she designed, produced and showed her collections. At the same time she was involved in a range of other artistic endeavors - including the creation of a punk band as well as exhibitions of her Asian-American art.
Returning to New York, she focused her efforts on creating and developing her vision of a locally-designed, sourced and manufactured fashion business through the creation of Mischka Velasco LLC with her partner.
Her influences include John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Audrey Hepburn, Lana Del Ray, Hello Kitty, the 1940s, the 1960s, modern-day pin-up girls, all the unique New York women with cutting-edge street style.
Mischka has thrown herself into every aspect of the business from fabric and sourcing, to design and pattern making to fashion show production and sales. With the Mischka Velasco LLC team now in place, Mischka has been able to make the design process her main focus. She feels that one of the most important things an entrepreneur can do is to ensure they understand all aspects of the business from start to finish.
For Mischka, the most rewarding part of being a designer is when all the hard work pays off and her creations come to life on the catwalk. As each season approaches, she loves working night and day in her Soho studio to create, design and produce the clothes with her colleagues in the Mischka Velasco team. She always tries to surround herself with talented people from the New York area; she learns new things about various aspects of design or of business and at the same time hopes to inspire those she works with to have the same love of fashion as she does.
