Photo Flash: Broadway Workshop Brings XANADU Back to NYC

Broadway Workshop, New York's top youth theatre program brought the Broadway musical XANADU, back to New York this past weekend. Broadway Workshop's production marked the first NYC staging of Xanadu since the 2007 Broadway production. Performances took place The Baruch Performing Arts Center and ran May 17th through May 19th. XANADU follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time - the first ROLLER DISCO! But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos abounds.

This hilarious, roller skating, musical adventure about following your dreams despite the limitations others set for you, rolls along to the original hit score composed by pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, and includes, "Magic", "All Over The World", "Suddenly", "I'm Alive", "Evil Woman", "Have You Never Been Mellow" and "Xanadu", to name a few, and is based on the Universal Pictures' cult classic movie of the same title, which starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. .

Broadway Workshop's production featured 50 teenaged actors who are divided into two casts. Students in the Xanadu cast come from throughout New York City and the tri-state area and have a wealth of Broadway, regional theatre, film and television experience. Broadway's Brianna Gentilella (How The Grinch Stole Christmas) and Amelia Scaramucci (LES MISERABLES- Film) shared the role of Kira.

XANADU will was directed by Marc Tumminelli and Choreographed by Casey Leigh Thompson with Musical Direction by Kat Sherrell, Set Design by Carl Tallent, Costume Design by Taran Muller, Lighting Design by Dan Jobbins, Sound Design by Randy Taber. Marty Thomas who starred in the original Broadway production of Xanadu served as the Skating Coach.
