Photo Exhibit to Feature Images from Children First Academy Students at Burton Barr Library, Begin. 3/21 ImageEighteen budding photographers from Children First Academy, which serves at-risk or homeless children, will see the images they captured during a ten-week mentoring experience with professional photographers on exhibit at the Burton Barr Library from March 21 to April 14.

Twelve professional photographers mentored the students throughout January and February as they took pictures at school, on field trips and on their own using digital point-and-shoot cameras donated by individuals throughout the community. Nine of the photographers are members of Through Each Other's Eyes, a nonprofit organization.

The project was organized by Kids in Focus and sponsored by Through Each Other's Eyes and McKenna Pro.

"Kids in Focus uses photography as a tool to help these students build self-esteem and awareness," said Kids in Focus Founder and Executive Director Karen Shell, who also is a professional photographer. "The kids learn to see the world around them differently which helps them change their perspectives about themselves and their environment."

The exhibit will begin with an opening reception on Wednesday, March 19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. when the students will be introduced and will receive hard-bound books that include their personal histories and photo captions.

In addition to Shell, other photographer mentors were: David Moore, Jim Marshall, Art Holeman, Dean Stevenson, Maurice Sartirana, Carol Cane, Dennis Scully, Michael Norton, Claudia Johnstone, Jason Grubb and Shari Miller.
