In the Cabaret world they call it a sound check, in the world of classical music it's an orchestra rehearsal. As Maestro Thomas Crawford raised his hands for the first note of the afternoon rehearsal of the American Classical Orchestra, the orchestra surprised him with some music that was not on his podium. Happy Birthday! I've gotten some tuneful ecards but nothing like Happy Birthday being played to me live, by 50 musicians.
There was no need to check the sound in Alice Tully Hall this afternoon. The transmission of sound that emanates from the Adrienne Arsh Stage is acoustical perfection. The natural fidelity of hearing a live orchestra in a concert hall can never be equalled, and the evenings concert goers are in for some spectacular serious sounds by a great orchestra, chorus, and vocalists.
