The Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of The Apple Tree, with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Bock and Harnick, opened at Studio 54 on Thursday, December 14th after beginning previews on Tuesday, November 28th. The show will play a limited engagement through Sunday, March 11th, 2007.
Starring Tony Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked), Marc Kudisch (See What I Wanna See) and Brian d'Arcy James (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), The Apple Tree features direction by Gary Griffin (The Color Purple), choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, with musical supervision by Rob Fisher.
"From the songwriting team of She Loves Me and Fiddler On The Roof comes a unique evening of three one-act musicals about men, women and a little thing called temptation. The Apple Tree is based on "The Diary of Adam and Eve" by Mark Twain; "The Lady or the Tiger?" by Frank R. Stockton; and "Passionella" by Jules Feiffer, with additional book material by Jerome Coopersmith," state press notes. The Apple Tree premiered on Broadway on October 18th, 1966 at the Shubert Theatre starring Alan Alda and Barbara Harris, directed by Mike Nichols. The production is based on the acclaimed 2005 New York City Center Encores! revival of The Apple Tree staring Chenoweth and directed by Griffin.
