Last night, December 18, the New York Pops, led by Music Director Steven Reineke, presented an evening full of holiday cheer at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage with help from Tony award nominees Stephanie J. Block and Brian d'Arcy James. Featuring a program of holiday favorites and joined by Judith Clurman's Essential Voices USA, the concert returns tonight, December 19. Stephanie J. Block has established herself as one of Broadway's most versatile leading ladies. She has starred in Little Miss Sunshine (Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical); The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical and Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Musical); Anything Goes; By the Way, Meet Vera Stark; 9 to 5: The Musical (Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical); Wicked; The Pirate Queen; and The Boy From Oz. She starred in the First Nat'l Touring Company of Wicked as Elphaba (Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Actress, Carbonell Award for Best Actress in a Musical).
Brian d'Arcy James is a three time Tony Award nominee, for his performance as Nick Bottom in the currently running hit musical Something Rotten, for his performance as Shrek in Shrek the Musical, (winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award for that role), and also as Sidney Falco in Sweet Smell of Success. Brian can currently be seen starring alongside Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdam sin the feature film Spotlight which opened to rave reviews this fall. He, alongside his costars, were most recently honored with the Gotham Jury Award for best ensemble. Brian originated the role of King George in Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda at the Public Theater. He is an OBIE Award winner for his portrayal of a hapless thug in Conor McPherson's The Good Thief. Other Broadway and Off-Broadway credits include Macbeth, Time Stands Still, Next to Normal, The Wild Party, Port Authority (Lucille Lortel Winner), The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Apple Tree, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Titanic, Carousel, and Blood Brothers.
The New York Pops is the largest independent pops orchestra in the United States, and the only professional symphonic orchestra in New York City specializing in popular music. Under the leadership of dynamic Music Director and Conductor Steven Reineke, The New York Pops continues to re-imagine orchestral pops music. The orchestra performs an annual subscription series and birthday gala at Carnegie Hall and a summer series at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, NY. The New York Pops is dedicated to lifelong learning, and collaborates with public schools, community organizations, children's hospitals and senior centers throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
