On Sunday, October 7, Jane Alexander starred as D. H. Lawrence's widow, Frieda, in a reading of the new play, A Moon To Dance By, by Thom Thomas at Primary Stages (59 East 59th Street).
The cast also included Maxwell Caulfield (Monty) and Robert Cuccioli (Angelo); directed by Edwin Sherin and narrated by Jeremy Holm.
"The wife of a British university professor runs off with one of his students and abandons her children. She then flaunts her affair, urging housewives to follow her example. This was Frieda Weekley in 1912, and the student was soon-to-be-infamous author D.H. Lawrence. The play takes place on their ranch near Taos, New Mexico in July, 1939, after Lawrence's death. Frieda and her Italian lover Angelo are visited by her estranged son Monty, who is now a married man with children of his own. An emotional war dance erupts between mother and son just as the world itself is on the brink of conflict," explain press notes. New Harmony Theatre in New Harmony, Indiana premiered the play in 2005.
