The Maui OnStage production of the racy musical THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS played its final show on August 2, 2009 to an enthusiastic full house. The production, which was presented at the Historic Iao Theater, played 12 performances spanning four weekends. The production caused a little of a stir amongst the Maui community because of its title, but the cast and crew proved that there was "nothing dirty going on." Executive Director for Maui Onstage, Alexis Dascoulias, described the experience as a true example of what makes Community Theater so great. The cast included fifty four local and new to Maui actors. They were led by director Kristi Scott, musical director Steven Dascoulias, and special guest choreographer, from Maine, Alden Caple.
THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS tells the true story of the infamous bordello known as the Chicken Ranch. Frequented by law officials, politicians, football players, and others, the Chicken Ranch, led by Miss Mona Stangley, was a thriving business. With a strict set of rules, an array of girls from all over the country flocked to Miss Mona's to earn some money. However, Houston newsman Melvin P. Thorpe exposed its existence and eventually became successful in closing the Chicken Ranch. "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" originally opened on Broadway at the 46th Street Theater on June 19, 1978. In 1982 a feature film based on the musical was made featuring Dolly Parton.
