Just yesterday, Motown founder and legendary songwriter, producer, director, innovative entrepreneur, teacher and visionary Berry Gordy joined the ranks of Broadway royalty as he was honored with his very own Sardi's portrait. Gordy, the founder of Motown, is also a songwriter, producer, director, innovative entrepreneur, teacher and visionary. Actively involved in the Civil Rights movement, he released the recorded speeches of DR. Martin Luther King, Jr. His films include Lady Sings the Blues (five Academy Award nominations) and Mahogany. A partial list of honors and awards Gordy has received includes four honorary doctorates in philosophy (Occidental College), the humanities (Morehouse College, Michigan State University) and music (Eastern Michigan University), the Gordon Grand Fellow from Yale University, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Grammy Salute to Industry Icons President's Merit Award, the 2013 Marian Anderson Award, BET's Visionary Award, and Ebony's first Lifetime Achievement Award.
