On Thursday, October 21, 2010 producers Tony Ponturo and Fran Kirmser, along with executive producer Nicole Kastrinos, will open LOMBARDI at the Circle in the Square Theatre On Broadway, directed by Tony nominee Thomas Kail. Previews will begin Thursday, September 23, 2010, following a July 22-28 engagement at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Joining Ponturo and Kirmser as a special producing partner is the National Football League, marking the organization's first foray on Broadway.
LOMBARDI, a new American play from Academy Award-winning playwright Eric Simonson, is based on the best-selling biography, When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi, by Pulitzer Prize winning author David Maraniss, and tells the inspirational story of the Hall of Fame football coach.
Yesterday, June 3, Ponturo and Kirmser, along with Kastrinos hosted an unveiling ceremony of the LOMBARDI window display at the Circle in the Square Theatre. Celebrating the event was Kail, Tracy Perlman, the NFL's Vice President of Entertainment Marketing and Promotions, Circle in the Square's Theodore Mann, and representatives from Lombardi's alma mater, Fordham University, where he was the star lineman and one of a group called "The Seven Blocks Granite" at a time when college football was wildly popular in New York. Fordham representatives included Frank McLaughlin, Fordham Director of Athletics (Fordham '71); John Cirillo, Fordham PR ('74); Tom Masella, Head Fordham Football Coach; Joe Favorito, LOMBARDI staff (Fordham '85); and John Johnson, LOMBARDI associate producer (Fordham '02). Vince Lombardi continues to play a huge role in Fordham's football history and lore.
