Driving Miss Daisy stars Vanessa Redgrave and Boyd Gaines, along with playwright Alfred Uhry and director David Esbjornson surprised co-star James Earl Jones onstage with an 80th birthday celebration yesterday, January 17. The celebration was followed by a post-performance talk-back for Martin Luther King Day with Uhry and Esbjornson, moderated by Driving Miss Daisy producer Jed Bernstein.

Tony Award-winners James Earl Jones, Vanessa Redgrave and Boyd Gaines star in the smash hit Broadway production of Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning Driving Miss Daisy. Uhry's classic play is a timeless, searing, funny, and ultimately hopeful meditation on race relations in America, told through the complex relationship between two of popular culture's most enduring characters.
Martin Luther King Day is a special day at Driving Miss Daisy - not only is it Mr. Jones' 80thBirthday, but Dr. King is an off stage presence in the play, and his impact on race relations in mid-century America serves as a catalyst for the evolution of Hoke and Daisy's relationship.
