Later tonight, The New York Pops - a symphonic orchestra known for presenting popular programs of exceptional quality - will launch its 32nd season at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage with All You Need is Love: The Music of The Beatles. Music Director Steven Reineke - described by The New York Times as a "polished, welcoming host" who is "young and vigorous, with a playful attitude" - will lead the orchestra in an opening night celebration of The Beatles' greatest hits recreated by the acclaimed Finnish vocal ensemble Rajaton. The concert will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's arrival in America. Concertgoers can expect to hear fresh renditions of Beatles songs including "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "Yesterday," "She Loves You," and "Let It Be," among others. The New York Pops' 32nd season continues on Friday, November 14, 2014, 7:30PM at Carnegie Hall, with By Special Request: An Evening with the Orchestra, starring the musicians of The New York Pops led by Steven Reineke. Featuring popular symphonic masterpieces, this concert will include selections from great American composers such as Copland, Gershwin, and Bernstein; as well as the New York premiere of "Festival Te Deum" written by The New York Pops' very own Steven Reineke. For this performance, the orchestra will be joined by Essential Voices USA, under the musical direction of Judith Clurman.
The Finnish word Rajaton translates as "boundless" - a word that so accurately describes the way this six-voice a cappella ensemble approaches music. Regularly performing around a hundred concerts and workshops each year, Rajaton exposes their audiences to the kind of diversity of repertoire, singing style, and stage presentation that has made them a phenomenon on the world stage. In their native Finland, Rajaton is a bona fide pop phenomenon, successfully bridging the gap that often exists between classical and mainstream convention.
Rajaton has released 13 different albums, their latest conquest being a children's album, Suomen lasten lauluja (Songs of Finland's Children), released in 2012. The last three of their albums were released through the group's own record label, Boundless Records. In 2013 the group released a Christmas movie, filmed in the magical Ylläs fell in Lapland. In the autumn of 2014, Rajaton celebrates 17 years of music-making with one double platinum, three platinum and eight gold records in Finland under their belt, as their worldwide record sales are drawing near 400,000 copies altogether.
