On Thursday October 16th 2008, in honor of the opening of the revitalized Father Duffy Square and the new TKTS booth, the Theatre Development Fund (TDF) and the Times Square Alliance (TSA) hosted the Inaugural lighting of the red steps under which the TKTS booth sits, in celebration of the Broadway community. This marked the first time the newly designed glowing red staircase was lit for the public.
The event was hosted by Tony winner
Brian Stokes Mitchell (Kiss Me, Kate), Tony winner
Sutton Foster (
Shrek The Musical), Broadway personality
Julie Halston (
Gypsy), and Emmy Award winner
John Leguizamo (
American Buffalo). They were joined by cast members from various other Broadway and Off-Broadway shows who all joined in with a chorus of "Give My
Regards to Broadway" after the stairs had been lit.
Theatre Development Fund (TDF)'s new TKTS booth is a state-of-the-art fiberglass shell encased by an all-glass structure, which sits under a glowing red glass staircase. The slip-resistant glass steps are lit from below with advanced LED technology, and utilize unique geothermal-based heating and cooling technology. From atop this amphitheatre-style staircase, 27 steps high, 16 feet above street level, visitors now have a unique vantage point to take in the excitement of Times Square as never before, making Duffy Square a new destination for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
